ED conducts raids in co-op banks in four districts

Officers of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids in the head offices of cooperative banks in four districts on Friday.

Different teams comprising officers of the central investigating agency went to the branches of the banks in Howrah, Hooghly, Birbhum and Nadia.

At around 10 am, a four-member team of ED went to the head office of Central Cooperative Bank in Howrah district.

The head office is situated at Uluberia. The raid was conducted after the ED officials had received information that Rs 50.87 crore was deposited in the bank.

The ED officials went through the documents of the banks and questioned some of its officials.

Sources said that the officials didn’t find any discrepancies on the part of the bank. But the raids would continue. The officers had also taken some of the documents for further verification.

It is learnt that ED officials would be visiting some banks in other districts on Saturday and it will continue for the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, officials of the Income Tax conducted raid in the house of a businessman in Siliguri and New Town.

The raid was conducted after receiving information that he had kept a huge amount of unaccounted money and jewellery in his house.

The officers interrogated the businessman for long hours and sought documents related to his business.
