EC removes 5 SPs, Mamata miffed

The five SPs were posted in Jhargram, West Midnapore, Murshidabad and Bardhaman respectively. ‘How can the Election Commission transfer and name new officers without consulting the state government?’ asked Banerjee. ‘I respect the EC but I will not bow my head’, she said.

‘You will only listen to the Congress...to make the Congress win, BJP win. You will have to take my resignation. I will not remove a single officer, not while I am chief minister. Do what you like in Delhi’, warned Banerjee. The Election Commission did not respond to questions on Banerjee’s challenge, saying it would come out with a press statement if required.

The Election Commission ordered the removal of officers after the BJP, the Congress and the CPI(M) complained against them for failing to address violations of model code of conduct. Leaders of the three parties on Sunday urged the EC to ensure the chief electoral officer of West Bengal pays attention to opposition grievances. Accusing the electoral office in Kolkata of failing to promptly redress their grievances of violation of Model Code of Conduct, the three political parties complained to Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath about ‘incomplete actions’ by the election officials on Sunday.
