‘E-rickshaws need feasible regulatory framework’

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday discussed the issue of rising number of electronic-rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in the capital city with the transport minister Ramakant Goswami, commissioner (transport) Rajendra Kumar and other senior officers of the department.

Dikshit underlined the need of formulating a feasible regulatory framework for e-rickshaws keeping in view the safety concern and the rickshaws being non-polluting.

The rickshaws have been proving beneficial in connecting various places especially places within short radius. The rickshaws would also prove to be the best connectivity between the Metro stations and nearby colonies.

The rising number of e-rickshaws may create difficulties at the later stage.  The chief minister instructed the department to examine the entire ambit of the issue and come out with a feasible regulatory framework at the earliest.  The e-rickshaws are presently not covered under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Later, a separate meeting was chaired by Goswami to discuss the issue in length. The minister instructed the transport department to take up the issue on priority in order to ensure safety.

The fast-increasing number of e-rickshaws may become a traffic hazard and result in accidents on the roads. According to transport officials, it is time to act fast and take all precautionary measures to overcome the ensuing problems.  The rickshaws are looking elegant and comfortable presently but needs to be examined for their technical stability.
