E-Midnapore to take action against dumping of building materials

Dumping of building materials including sand, stone chips and bricks on roads is quite common. The reason being there is no enough space to store the materials to build a building or a highrise. Thus, a section of businessmen choose roadsides as a place to store the same. At many places, some people even run business of supplying building materials by storing the materials on road side.

But it leads to several problems, including major road accidents. First of all, it reduces the road space. Thus, it leads to traffic congestion. In monsoon, the sand washes away and the entire road gets filled up with it. As a result roads turn slippery and vehicles mainly two-wheelers meet with accidents.

It is a quite common sight not only on East Midnapore, but in major part of the state. Even in some places, real estate developers do not even bother about road safety and dump building materials near schools.

The roads near school premises get congested twice in a day. Once, when the students enter and again when the school gets over. Both the time people get harassed as roads get narrower for dumping of building materials.

A senior official of the district said, that if needed, stringent action will be taken if anyone is caught dumping building materials on road for construction of their own building. A person has to make his or her own arrangement to store materials to build their house.

The situation on highways is grimmer as a section of truck drivers work hand in gloves with some local building materials supplier and dump a quantity of sand or stone chip on the side of the highway before reaching their destination to make some fast money. The local suppliers then sell the materials in the locality.

The BDO and inspector-in-charges of the police station have been directed to keep a watch and to take immediate step against the offenders.

It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister will launch a drive “Safe drive Save Life” on Friday to ensure that the number of road accidents go down in the state. Thus, each and every district has to take necessary steps to make the project successful.
