DUSU polls: NSUI announces list of candidates, ABVP chronicles feats

With the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections just round the corner, the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) released the names of 10 probable candidates on Wednesday. It has also decided to release a separate manifesto of DU’s North-East students. BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ABVP, on the other hand, came out with the lists of “achievements” of the outgoing students’ union.

The final four candidates, for president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary posts, will be selected among these 10 names.  Meanwhile, Chanakya Chhatra Parishad, a fringe outfit in DUSU elections, merged with NSUI. ABVP, which is eyeing for a hat-trick of clean sweep of
the DUSU polls, claimed that it has increased the influence of students’ union in the University.

“Earlier, DU administration didn’t take students’ union seriously. From the time the ABVP was in power, the clout of students’ union has increased and many pro-students decisions have been taken,” said Saket Bahuguna of ABVP.

To counter ABVP’s alleged suppression of free-speech in campuses, NSUI said that it will start a “Save My Education, Save My Institution” campaign.  “We will unmask ABVP’s fake nationalism and fight for free speech in educational institutions. We will fight for women and N-E students,” said Amrita Dhawan, NSUI president.
