DU teachers to protest against UGC notification today

The teachers, who have already boycotted the evaluation process against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) notification, will stage a protest march to Parliament from the Commission’s office on Monday. The decision was taken at the DUTA’s General Body meeting on Saturday.

“Student organisations and member associations of Federation of Central Universities’ Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA) and the two state universities are expected to participate in the march as well,” said Rajesh Jha, joint secretary of DUTA.

The teachers are opposing the notification, which has increased the workload of ‘direct teaching’ on assistant professors from 16 to 24 hours per week and from 14 to 22 hours for associate professors.
Around 5,000 teachers staged a protest against the UGC notification at the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) on Saturday. The teachers described the ministry’s explanation as diversionary tactics.

“The teachers will not accept any diversionary tactics of the UGC or the Human Resource Development Ministry,” said Jha, adding that the teachers’ association has decided to extend the boycott of the evaluation process.

The teachers have also threatened to boycott the admission process if the ministry does not fulfill their demands.  Admission to undergraduate courses in the university are going to start from June 1 and the process will be completely online from this year.

Besides, the results for the undergraduate courses, offered by the university, may  be delayed due to the boycott of evaluation process.
