DTC yet to fine tune its info system

Despite 500 bus shelters were  earmarked for installing the Passenger Information System (PIS) in 2011, only a few actually got  it. As of now, PIS display boards are installed at the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor– between Delhi Gate and Ambedkar Nagar Terminal, along the route taken by buses 419, 423, 521 and 522. PIS is supposed to inform passengers about the expected arrival time of the buses.

But to make matters worse,  even those few installed PIS are not fully functional.

But Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMMS) claims that despite regular reminders from them, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) failed to feed the data in the system. As a result, PIS displays information only regarding cluster buses and not DTC buses.

DTC though has its excuse in place. ‘It’s an ongoing project. Until just a month ago, we were testing the PIS project. Now the results are out and we finally received the certification,’ said a DTC official.

According to the official, as per the initial plans, ‘entire Delhi was to be covered, along the lines of Delhi Metro.’

The official added that, ‘The PIS project, which was started a year ago, faced technical snags and political intervention in between, and thus delaying the project.’

Meanwhile, the official said, DTC is also planning to install GPS system in all the low floor buses.
