Drunk Parliament guard assaults woman

In a bizarre incident on Friday, senior security officials were left red-faced after one of their men ran away from his duty. The on-duty security personnel deputed at Parliament House, allegedly, assaulted a woman in an inebriated condition in the afternoon.

According to sources in the Parliament, the incident was reported around 3.30 pm. A reporter with a TV channel had come to meet someone in the Parliament. As she reached gate number 2-3, Talkatora Road, the security official, identified as UBS Negi, assaulted her in an inebriated condition.

The woman then screamed and security personnel rushed to her aid. A message was flashed and senior officers were informed. ‘When Negi came to know that senior officers, including additional director Rakesh Sethi, are coming to the spot, he ran away from the duty and is still absconding,’ the sources said.

Confirming the incident, director, Parliament security, Ajay Anand said, ‘Yes, this incident has taken place and we are taking appropriate action against the security official. However, it is impossible to ascertain whether he was drunk or not, as he ran away from the spot. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against him.’

Sources said a written complaint was lodged by the woman and appropriate action was being taken against the culprit. The matter, however, was not referred to local police.

The incident has raised concerns over security of the most important installation of the country. ‘Even though there is a rule that liquor can’t be taken in the premises, there are reports that it is found in the store room often’, sources said.

The additional director, security Parliament, PR Meena said he was on leave and that his juniors should be contacted for comments. He, however, had apparently gone to the spot after the incident.
