Drunk Delhi cop sparks ‘terror’ scare in AIR HQ

According to Delhi <g data-gr-id="57">police</g> the constable identified as Ankit Kumar received a bullet injury on the left side of his chest, was later rushed to a hospital and is stated to be in a stable condition. In the initial <g data-gr-id="56">investigation</g> it was found that the constable was in an inebriated state when the incident took place.
Ankit was accompanied by a friend, <g data-gr-id="48">Golu</g>, who abandoned him after the accident and fled. Both of them are in their thirties. In his statement to the <g data-gr-id="45">police</g> the security guard said that he fired only after he sensed a potential terror attack.

“A case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 427 (mischief causing damage to public property) has been registered against the police personnel at the Timarpur police station,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

According to the police, the incident was reported around 3 am when a speeding car rammed into the gate of AIR station at Mall Road. The impact of the crash was so high that the car broke open the gate and entered the AIR premises, leaving the Nagaland Police guard, who was stationed at a kiosk near the gate, totally perplexed.

According to police, Kumar was behind the <g data-gr-id="42">wheel,</g> while <g data-gr-id="43">Golu</g> was sitting beside him at the time of
the incident.

The alert security guard, suspecting nothing less than a potential terror attack by then, locked his aim and fired a shot. The bullet hit the left side of Ankit’s chest and he collapsed a few metres after the car exited the gate of the AIR premises.

The constable’s identity was <g data-gr-id="60">soon,ascertained</g> once he was frisked and then he was rushed to a nearby hospital, which immediately referred him to LNJP Hospital. The bullet missed Ankit’s heart hardly by a couple of inches, and then he had to undergo an immediate surgery, said a
police official.

However, the police are yet to confirm whether Ankit was actually drunk and whether he was in a joyride with his friend. But clearly, Ankit was not on duty during the incident. Ankit is posted at the First Battalion of Delhi Police. He is presently reporting at the Kalyanpuri police station in
east Delhi.
