Driver who mowed down woman sent to five-day police custody

It may be mentioned that a girl was crushed under the wheels of a mini-truck when the helper of the 
moving vehicle tried to pull her inside.The girl was returning with four other girls after working in a candy manufacturing factory along Delhi Road in Hooghly.

Two friends of the victim, who tried to free the victim, were also injured in the incident. Police said that the driver of the mini-truck, Ranjit Boitha, was arrested on Saturday night from Belgachia in Howrah. He was produced before the Chinsurah Court on Sunday morning amidst tight security.
The court remanded him in the custody of the police for 5 days. The police are, however, yet to arrest the helper, who is the main culprit.

The police had conducted raids at different places on Sunday in search of the other accused. They came to know about his whereabouts after interrogating Boitha. However the police didn’t find him at the places where he was supposed to stay.

The police have got the address of the accused helper from Boitha and went to his house in the wee hours on Sunday. Police collected the photographs of the accused from his house and distributed it to different police stations.

Meanwhile, the local people put up a road block twice since Sunday morning demanding arrest of the prime accused. It led to massive traffic congestion on Delhi Road.

The road block continued for around 45 minutes in the morning and for half an hour in the afternoon. Senior police officers of the district had to intervene to assure people that the accused will be arrested soon.

The road block was withdrawn after the police officers said that they were leaving no stone unturned to get hold of the helper.

Moreover, the local people demanded necessary steps for security of people on Delhi Road as often untoward incident take place there and Saturday’s incident had led to a panic among the residents of the area mainly the women those need to avail the road after the sunset as well.
