Dreaded ultra Mangal Nagesia killed in fight between extremists

Fighting broke out between members of the CPI(Maoist) and former Naxals in Gumla district of Jharkhand on Monday, leading to the killing of Mangal Nagesia, leader of the Janhit Kranti Party,
which the authorities classify as a ‘criminal gang’.

Nagesia had formerly been a member of the CPI(Maoist). After leaving them he had joined the People’s Liberation Front of India, a splinter Maoist group, and then finally gone on to set up and become leader of the Janhit Kranti Party.

Bhimsen Tuti, superintendent of police of Gumla, said the Janhit Kranti Party had largely been involved in extorting money from industrial groups and construction companies.

Jharkhand has a number of breakaway Maoist groups, many of them now classified as ‘criminal gangs’, and a Jharkhand state intelligence study last year reported that the gangs extort as much
as Rs 50 crore a year between them.

A lot of the gangs are involved in turf wars among themselves and with the Maoists.

Tuti said the strength of Nagesia’s gang varied from time to time but that at the time he was killed, he had about 10 to 12 men under his command. Tuti added that the police were aware the CPI(Maoist) was gunning for Nagesia, because his writ over Gumla district had been making it harder for the Maoists to make headway in the area.
