Domestic violence at root of sisters’ plight?

The Rohini sisters could have starved themselves because of domestic violence, claimed family members. The reason why the elder sister went into depression was because she was abandoned by her husband, added the women’s relatives on Sunday.

The two ‘malnourished’ siblings, Mamta and Neerja, who did not step out of their house for the last six years, were rescued from their residence in Rohini on Saturday. The sisters lived with their 75-year-old mother and Mamta’s 12-year-old son. Some relatives used to chip in financially now and then as the family did not have any source of income.

Mamta Gupta, who is around 38 years old, was married to Deepak Gupta in 1996, who apparently lives in Shastri Nagar. It was an arranged marriage. A few years later, Deepak allegedly started assaulting Mamta physically, said a Mamta’s relative, who did not wish to be named. For the last 10 years, they have been living separately, he said, adding that ‘they are not divorced as yet’.

Mamta and her sister are undergoing treatment at Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital located in Sector 3, Rohini.

Mamta left her husband and came back to her mother’s house in Rohini, with her son who was just two years old at that time.

After the death of their father four years ago, who was employed at a shop in Paharganj area, both the two sisters and her mother Nirmala Devi, 75, had to face a financial crisis.

The savings that the family had, had gone into the treatment of their father’s disease. Because they could not afford it anymore, Mamta’s son dropped out of school after passing Class IX, said Neeraj Gupta, another relative, to Millennium Post.

The whole family is said to have gone into depression and they avoided outside contact gradually over the years and became a total recluse.

The condition of the sisters is critical, but stable.
