Doctors protest after getting assaulted by mob

Tension ran high at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital after some doctors were beaten up by the relatives of a patient who died at the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

A mob went on rampage ransacking a portion of the Rammohan block of the hospital where the 60-year-old patient died on Wednesday afternoon. They also beat up the doctors in the hospital. Many doctors received minor injuries after they were attacked by the mob.

As the situation was gradually going beyond the control, a huge contingent of police force was deployed to pacify the mob. To protest against the incident, junior doctors at the hospital joined a cease work disrupting the health services in the hospital. Dr Gouri Shankar Mahapatra, a doctor was seriously injured in the incident and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The patient Md Kamaluddin (60), a resident of Beniapukur area was admitted to the Ram Mohun block of the hospital on Wednesday morning. The family members of the victim alleged that the patient died after being administered wrong injection.

They also alleged that patients do not get proper facilities in the hospital. But on duty nurses denied the allegation saying that the patient’s condition deteriorated following his admission. Soon after his admission in the ITU, the patient died.

The doctors who were staging a protest inside the hospital campus demanded for the security of doctors in the hospital. They also threatened to continue the strike if the action was not taken against the accused who led the attack on the doctors.

It may be mentioned that doctors are becoming the soft target of the mob in case of a patient dies in the hospital.
