Disaster averted at Delhi Airport, KLM flight aborts landing due to runway scare

In a narrow escape, a major disaster was averted at Delhi Airport on Sunday when Dutch airline KLM’s flight was denied landing following a runway scare. According to airport sources, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) spotted a jeep on the runway and asked the pilot not to land the flight.

The ATC had to alert the pilot following a failed attempt to communicate with the inspection jeep on the runway.

Sources further said that an inspection jeep was standing on the runway for instruction from the ATC. Since the Air Traffic Control somehow failed to communicate with the waiting inspection jeep, the vehicle kept standing on the runway.

In the meanwhile, a KLM flight which was due for landing at the same runway where the inspection jeep was stationed, started descending for its final approach to land, when the alert Air Traffic Control on spotting the inspection jeep, asked the pilot of the KLM flight to abort the landing.

This communication from the ATC to the KLM aircraft at the nick of the time, averted a major air
disaster, said an official at the airport pleading anonymity.

“The inspection vehicle entered the runway after due clearance were taken from the ATC for a routine inspection. Meanwhile, an approaching aircraft was asked to go around as a normal safety precaution,” said an airport official on the condition of anonymity.
