Dimple’s constituency to get horticulture projects

The UP government is likely to establish a centre of excellence for ensuirng increased production of fruits and vegetables in Kannauj - the Parliamentary constituency of the Chief Minister's wife Dimple Yadav. Besides assisting local farmers on all aspects of horticulture, the Centre would also conduct researches aimed at developing new high-yielding varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Director of State Horticulture Department, ON Singh after visiting Kannauj for spot inspection recently, said that the land of Manpur village near Kannauj bypass was found appropriate for the project which is estimated to cost around Rs 50 crore initially.

'A proposal has already been sent to the Union Government and  the procedure for land acquisition would be initiated soon,' he informed.

Earlier in August, Minister of State for Horticulture, Rajkishore Singh had called on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to discussthe project of establishing two such centres in UP. The second is expected to be set up in Basti - the home town of the Horticulture minister.

'The Centre will need at least ten hectares of land for the augmentation of the project. Since the UP Horticulture department already owns a nursery of 4 hectares at Manpur village, the top officials have been directed to acquire the additional 6 hectares of land from local farmers. Soon a meeting of villagers will be convened at Manpur for their consent for land acquisition,' said an official.

The official further informed : 'Following discussions with Irrigation minister Shivpal Singh Yadav, agro scientists from Israel have consented to extending technical help in setting up a modern laboratory in Kannauj. Yadav is presently visiting Israel with a delegation of officials.'
