Dikshit claims 50 per cent fall in HIV cases

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said that there has been a decline of around 50 per cent in the number of HIV cases reported from the capital between April 2002 and March 2013.

She claimed that the antiretroviral treatment (ART) being provided by the Delhi government at its nine ART centres has resulted in a substantial decrease in death rate of HIV-infected people. The chief minister said that there was a 33 per cent  reduction in HIV related deaths between April 2008 and March 2013.

The city government has been providing free ART to 13,044 HIV-positive people, including 766 children, at its centres.  Further, the city government has been implementing various welfare schemes for people living with HIV/AIDS, Dikshit said. Financial assistance is being provided under several categories to HIV-positive people in the capital.
