Did fear of being booked in fresh cases push Bansal over edge?

Was the fear of being booked in another case by the CBI the reason why suspended Corporate Affairs Ministry officer BK Bansal ended his life? He was suspected of owning around twenty properties which are disproportionate to his income, sources said.

A highly-placed source in the department said, “Even though Bansal was out on bail in a graft case after his wife and daughter ended their lives, the CBI was planning to initiate a new case of disproportionate assets.”

According to sources, when Bansal was arrested from his residence, the CBI team had found documents of around 20 properties owned by him and details of 60 bank accounts. As per the documents, 9 properties were in Sirsa, 3 in Delhi, 3 in Faridabad, and another in Gurgaon, Hapur
and Bhatinda.

Hours before Bansal along with his son ended his life, Bansal visited CBI office after which some sleuths visited his house. Sources said: “After conducting raids at some of his assets, he was quizzed about these properties and bank accounts.”

Bansal was arrested by CBI on July 17 while taking a bribe of Rs 9 lakh from a Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company Elder Pharmaceuticals, owned by a TV serial actor Arjun Saxena. Bansal was dealing with matters related to violations committed by the company and he had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50 lakh for not recommending investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office on the company’s negative inspection report.

Meanwhile, the CBI teams were also investigating into the cases that were handled by Bansal during his tenure.
