Despite Cauvery conundrum, Modi assures Jaya of support

Following the success of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s stupendous victory, prime minister designate Narendra Modi on Sunday assured Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa of ‘absolute cooperation’ between the Centre and her state. Modi also praised the AIADMK supremo for her party’s ‘remarkable victory’ for successfully sweeping 37 of the 39 seats in the Lok Sabha polls in the state. Modi’s assurance came in the wake of the AIADMK chief saying in her letter that she looked forward to a meaningful era of Centre-state cooperation with the BJP leader at the helm of affairs.

Modi spoke to Jayalalithaa over phone and thanked her for her letter on Friday congratulating him. ‘Selvi J Jayalalithaa, wished him a very successful tenure as prime minister of India. The honourable prime minister designate assured the honourable chief minister that there will be absolute co-operation between the government of India and the government of Tamil Nadu,’ a state government release said.

It should be noted that Modi support to Tamil Nadu means precariously balancing the Cauvery river water sharing issue. If Modi favours Jaya, it means rubbing Karnataka government the wrong way.
