Delhi’s claim to shame

The data in possession with Millennium Post reveals that as many as 847 calls have been received by the Delhi Police on helpline number 1093, Special Cell (North-Eastern States) from 1 January to 12 November. According to the police, out of 847 received calls, 645 were crime related.

The data clearly paints a different picture as compared to the government’s claims that repeatedly mentions people from the North-east living in the city are safe and are not being specifically targeted.

The data further reveals that 139 First Information Reports (FIR) of crimes committed against North East people have been registered at various police stations in Delhi. Shockingly, 40% of the total complaints received by the Delhi Police are filed in the south district. Out of 645 complaints, 259 were received in south district from which 58 cases were filed at Vasant Vihar police station. As many as 48 complaints were received at Safdarjung Enclave police station.

More than 2,00,000 people from North-East states are living in the national Capital out of which 50% are females, as reported by the North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH). ‘I have been running a helpline for North East people since 2007. The crime against people of North-East is shooting up. Major problems are faced by those working as in major cases the company do not pay them salaries or hold their salaries for long. Several times, the company terminates them without prior notices,’ Bruce K Thangkhal, Media Incharge, NESCH told Millennium Post.

Out of the list of complaints, 56 included eve teasing, 13 molestation cases, 22 cyber crime cases (Racial Discrimination through social media), 15 anti-obscene cases, 10 rape/attempt to rape cases (6+4) and 4 murder/attempt to murder cases (3+1).

72 cases of threat, cheating, harassment, domestic violence, etc. Recently in the face of rising incidents of crimes against NE people, Minister for state for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju has assured that the Home Ministry will implement recommendations of the committee headed by MP Bezbaruah, which has looked into various concerns of the people of the Northeast region living in different parts of India, especially metropolises.
