Youth disillusioned with BJP ideology, says Cong

NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken on Wednesday said that the students of Delhi University have rejected the ideology of the BJP and its students' outfit ABVP, after NSUI won the president and vice-president's post in the DUSU polls.
The Congress leader said that this time NSUI increased its vote percentage and that the people of Delhi have started reposing their faith in Congress.
The Congress promptly hailed the victory as a triumph of "liberal values" and a "wake up call" for the prime minister.
Maken also demanded that re-counting for the post of joint secretary should be held under CCTV camera immediately; else they will go to court. He alleged that the joint secretary results were suspected to be tampered with, due to the "personal intervention" of senior BJP functionaries.
The DPCC President said the victory of the NSUI candidates, for the posts of president and vice-president, shows that the youth who helped Prime Minister Narendra Modi win the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with a record margin has become disillusioned with him.
Maken also said that three candidates of the NSUI had emerged victorious in an unofficial announcement during counting, but due to protests by the ABVP re-counting was done without CCTV surveillance for the post of joint secretary, after which the ABVP candidate was declared winner with a narrow margin.
All India Congress Committee's NSUI in-charge Ruchi Gupta said a complaint has been filed with the university's grievances committee on the issue.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who is currently out of the country, congratulated NSUI and thanked students for reposing their faith in the party.
"Congratulations NSUI on a stellar performance and President win in DUSU. (I) Thank students of DU for reposing faith in the Congress ideology," he tweeted.
Even his sister Priyanka Gandhi reached out and congratulated young leaders on the stupendous win.
Party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "The resounding victory of NSUI is a rejection of false promises of 'Acche Din' of Modiji".
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted his congratulations, saying "Congratulations @nsui on an outstanding performance in #DUSUelection2017. A triumph for liberal values on campus. Proud of you!"
Senior lawyer and Swaraj Abhiyan founder-member Prashant Bhushan also congratulated DUSU "for booting out ABVP goons". "After losses in JNU, Guwahati University, Panjab University, it's clear that students are rejecting ABVP," he tweeted.
