Woman found hanging, kin allege dowry death

Ghaziabad: A 24-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside her in-law's house in Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Wednesday night. Victim's family alleged that her in-laws killed her for dowry and then hanged her to make it look like a suicide.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Hemlata. Police added that she was married to Chandrakant, a native of Vijay Nagar area, around three months ago.

Victim's brother, Deepak Kumar, in a police complaint stated that soon after the marriage, Chandrakant's family, were demanding a car in dowry and were not happy with what they had given them in marriage. Very often they used to misbehave with Hemlata and threaten to leave her if we do not pay heed to their demands.

"We had given them much more than our limits. A motorcycle, cash, gold, furniture and clothes, all were given to them but still they wanted more. Her in-laws used to thrash her for no mistake and threaten her. Even a couple of days before the incident, she was beaten up by her husband and in-laws," read the complaint.

"Following the incident, an FIR under IPC sections 498A (punishment for cruelty by husband or his relatives), 304B (dowry death) and under section 3/4 of Dowry Prohibition Act against her husband and other family members. We are probing the matter and will make a breakthrough soon," said Shlok Kumar,
