Woman flung off train in bid to foil snatching attempt, dies

New Delhi: A 43-year-old woman died after she fell from a Yoga Express train near Old Delhi railway station. Police claimed that the incident happened after snatchers took her bag and when she objected it she fell and came under the train.

The deceased was standing at the train door when the incident happened, a few meters away from the Old Delhi Railway Station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway) Parwaiz Ahmed stated that they have got the complaint from her son about the incident after which they have started their investigation.

The deceased was identified as Sudhir Bansal a native of Rajasthan who was traveling with her son Gaurav (18) when the incident took place and her son became an eyewitness of her mother's death. She was crushed by the train which snapped a hand and leg from the body.

Bansal's younger son Gaurav is studying in Delhi University. She was accompanying him to the city to get him a hostel accommodation, the police said.

When the train was proceeding from Kishanganj railway station towards Old Delhi railway station, it had slowed down at Pul Mithai, near the Old Delhi Railway Station.

It is suspected that there was one person involved in the snatching. He tried to snatch her bag when she was standing at the train door and when she resisted the snatching attempt, she was thrown off the moving train and was run over, the police said.

The accused fled with the bag containing cash, some documents and an ATM card.

Her son jumped to save her but was unsuccessful. He rushed to his mother leaving most of his belongings on the train, he still had his phone. With it, he called the police control room and the ambulance helpline but said there was delayed response from both.

Police team reached the spot and the injured woman was sent to hospital where she was declared brought dead.
