Under fire, Gurugram top cop defends probe

Gurugram: A day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) debunked the investigation theory of Gurugram police, its top cop held a press briefing and defended his team. He said that the in comparison to 40 days of investigation by CBI, the district police had probed the matter for only a week and had not filed the charge-sheet in the case.

The Indian Police Service (IPS) officer refused to comment on the startling revelation made by the top investigating agency. "I do not have an idea of what the CBI has unearthed in the case. We had carried out investigation at a very early stage and then we handed over investigation to them. I am hopeful they will bring culprits to book and bring justice to the family," said Gurugram police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.
On the question of Gurugram police falsely implicating the bus conductor Ashok Kumar in the crime, the top cop asserted that they were still in the process of investigation and had not filed the charge-sheet in the case. He also categorically affirmed that they were not under any pressure to let off the high profile accused that may be involved in the case. "We had not concluded the investigation and had not filed the charge-sheet. Evidence was in the process of being gathered. There was no pressure at all. We did an honest attempt to bring justice to the family," he said
The press briefing comes at a time when Gurugram police is facing heavy flak over the handling of the case. In Gurugram to attend the function, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also refused to comment on the issue further.
On Wednesday, the head of the state had said that they will wait for the CBI to file its charge-sheet and then only take the adequate action.
Having dealt with various procedural lapses this year, the revelations however have dealt a severe blow to the credibility of district police. Questions now are being raised that why the police did not prevent vital evidences like blood samples being cleaned from the scene of crime.
There are also rumours that a senior level police official from Gurugram deliberately tried to suppress the vital evidences in the case that could have nailed the accused.
Legal counsel for Pradyuman parents on Wednesday asserted that in the days to come, there may be startling revelation that will come to the fore and more people may be penalised. Mohit Verma, the lawyer of Ashok Kumar, has affirmed that a defamation case will be filed against the Haryana police for shoddy investigations in the case.
