Trio of junkies who resorted to robbery to pay for drug habit held

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday said they have arrested three drivers for their involvement in six cases of robbery.
Police said that the accused persons were drug addicts and, in order to meet their needs, they used to commit robberies.
According to police, the accused were identified as Rohit (22), Chandan (25) and Gurtej (27).
Sources said that a police team received a tip-off that one of the accused will come near Salora park in Okhla–II on February 18.
After being identified, Rohi was nabbed from the spot.
On Rohit's instance, his associates were arrested from different locations.
After interrogation, the accused revealed that they had stolen three motorcycles, five smartphones and an auto-rickshaw.
All the stolen items were later recovered by cops.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal on Friday said that during their interrogation, all the three accused persons disclosed that live in the same neighbourhood and have been acquainted with each other from several years.
He added that all three men are school drop-outs and occasionally worked as taxi and delivery van drivers.
"The accused persons are alcohol and drug addicts and in order to meet their needs, they used to target labourers and working class people, particularly in Okhla area. They used to steal motorcycles to be used to committing robberies and flee the spot," Biswal said.
"Accused Gurtej was arrested in 2007 and is involved in as many as nine cases of snatching and theft. Rohit is involved in as many as five cases. Chandan fell in the company of the accused and developed the habit of addiction. To get easy money, he, along with his associates, started committing robberies," the DCP added.
