Transformer blast causes electrocution of two-yr-old

Gurugram: Poor upkeep of highly-charged power equipment in Gurugram was again highlighted when a blast in a transformer led to electrocution of three people, including a two-year-old boy identified as Raunak.
The toddler's mother and paternal aunt, who were in the house at the time, were the other victims and admitted to the ICU, where they are presently receiving treatment.
The incident was reported from Khandsa on Wednesday when the transformer placed at the electric poles blew off, causing a short circuit at the house that was located in proximity.
As the two women along with the child were barefoot, high-intensity electric current was felt. The bursting of the transformer also resulted in the electric equipment in the house catching fire.
What could have turned into a much bigger accident, however, ebbed as the neighbours quickly called the fire department to douse the fire.
In a similar incident on August 15 last year, six children aged between 7 to 15 years sustained severe burn injuries in Sector 56 area after the explosion of transformers due to short circuit in high voltage wires. 12-year-old Anju who had sustained 80 per cent burn injuries in the mishap later succumbed to her wounds.
Poor condition of wires that are unable to bear heavy electric load in addition to lack of proper resources in maintaining these wires are resulting in the wires getting wrecked.
There have been many complaints from the residents about continuous sparks in the electric wires in various areas remain unattended for a long time by the DHBVN officials.
These conditions further worsen during the rainy season. The situation seems to further deteriorate in the older areas of the city where low-hanging live electricity wires with wrong connections can result in a major catastrophe in dense areas like Sadar Bazaar, Gurdwara road, Rajiv Nagar and Hans Enclave market.
There have been no improvement in the condition even as separate departments have been created within the electricity board.
To address the problem, the Haryana government in collaboration with the Central government has initiated smart grid project. Under the project, the objective is to provide automated supply of power with the electric cables being laid underground. Even though the project has officially started, it has missed several of its deadlines.
