Thief beaten up by locals, dies mysteriously

New Delhi: A 31-year-old thief died after a failed robbery bid in North Delhi's Burari area. Police claimed that they are questioning the local people as it came to light that the deceased was beaten by them. It was the morning of Wednesday when the police station Burari got a PCR call where the caller claimed that one thief fell from the stairs and caught by the local people. The police team immediately reached the spot and found one person in the unconscious state after which he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad stated that during the investigation, the deceased was identified as Birbal who lived in Burari area. Describing the sequence of event, the senior police officer said that the deceased had gone in labour porter area to commit robbery but his plan went wrong when he found that the owner of the house was about to open the door. "He tried to go through the first floor with the help of stairs when he slipped and fell down. The residents caught him and they started beating him when he became unconscious and later a PCR call was made in this regard," said the police officer.

When asked if he was brutally thrashed, the senior police officer claimed that he was not mercilessly beaten up. "The residents had just started beating Birbal when he lost consciousness and the locals got panicked that what happened to him," the police officer said. Meanwhile, Delhi Police has registered a case under appropriate sections of Indian Penal Code. Police claimed that they have started questioning the local people after probe police found that they attacked the thief. "Once the investigation got completed, we will say what was the reason behind death," added the officer.

Recently, a 29-year-old man was beaten to death inside a drug addiction centre in South East Delhi's Tughlakabad Extension.
