Taking help inside ATMs can prove costly for you

NEW DELHI: If someone is standing behind you inside the ATM, beware, he might be noting down your pin code while his associate might offer you help and change the ATM card without your knowledge.

The South-East Delhi Police has arrested a gang of two accused who used to cheat potential targets near Faridabad Delhi Border suburbs. The two arrested men have been identified as Arif and Rahul.

One complainant approached police and aid that 2 persons entered the ATM booth and indulged in talks with the complainant. They both diverted the attention of the victim and swapped his ATM card.

After some time, the complainant found that his ATM card has been changed and both the accused persons had made fraudulent transactions of Rs. 70,000 from the card of the victim. Both the accused were arrested near Faridabad and a total of 43 ATMs were seized from their possession.

Accused persons disclosed that they used to target the low suburb areas near Delhi-Faridabad border. Thereafter, accused persons used to search for an ATM booth wherein no guard was on duty. Finally, they used to wait for the target near the ATM and once the victim entered the ATM, accused persons followed him and cleverly noted the PIN number entered by the victim. Thereafter, they used to indulge the victim in talks and divert his mind. In the meantime, one of the accused persons used to swap the victim's ATM card. Afterward, accused persons used to quickly leave the ATM booth and used the ATM card to withdraw money and shopping.

"Accused Arif was the kingpin of the gang and was expert in diverting the attention of victims and swapping his ATM cards. Accused Rahul, 22 years a resident of Faridabad, has studied till class 12th. Accused was out of work and in order to earn quick money accused Rahul joined Arif," said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP South East.
