NEW DELHI: To avoid mishaps on the road due to low visibility caused by smog, Delhi Police on Wednesday issued an advisory to motorists.
"It is advised that motorists observe certain precautions to avoid accidents and related injuries. Motorists are advised to take certain measures to avoid mishaps due to fog," Joint CP Traffic, Garima Bhatnagar said.
Motorists have been told to switch off their cell phones while driving to reduce distractions.
"Do not stop on the travelled portion of the road. You could become the first link in a chain-reaction collision. Do not speed up suddenly, even if the fog seems to be clearing. You could find yourself suddenly back in fog," said Bhatnagar told reporters.
Motorists have been told to check weather forecasts before driving. If there is a fog warning, they should to delay travel until fog clears.
If caught in the fog somehow, motorists are to slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
Motorists are to make sure the full lighting system of their vehicle is turned on. "Use low beam headlights. High beams reflect off the moisture droplets in the fog, making it harder to see. If you have fog lights on your vehicle, use them, in addition to your low-beams," said Bhatnagar.
Cops alerted that if the fog is too dense to continue, one must completely pull off the road and try to position one's vehicle in a safe parking area.
Emergency flashers must be turned on and windows and mirrors must be kept clean.
Defroster and wipers are to be used to maximise vision.
