Students protest outside hrd min office against seat cuts

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Wednesday, staged a protest demonstration outside the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), demanding withdrawal of the University Grants Commission's (UGC) notification, dated May 5, 2016, which has led to an 86 percent seat cut in the MPhil and PhD programmes of the varsity.

Led by JNU Students' Union leaders, including president Mohit Pandey and secretary Satarupa Chakraborty, the students were protesting against the drastic cut in seats of research programmes at JNU, offering only 194 seats for research aspirants against last year's 1,174. The students alleged that JNU is under siege by UGC, as several changes made in the University has affected the students.
