Speed limits imposed at Mall Mile in Gurugram

Gurugram: Citing indiscipline among commuters as a major reason for traffic blockades at MG road, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Police have set up speed limits for all categories of vehicles passing at the Mall Mile.
As per the new rules, if any vehicle is found to be speeding beyond the 60 km/hr speed limit, the drivers will be fined.
For auto drivers, the speed limit has been set at 40 km/hr, while for heavy commercial vehicles, it is 30 km/hr.
To make commuters aware of the new speed limits, MCG has began setting up boards at vital points of the busy route.
According to Gurugram Police officials, the move will not only result in smoother flow of traffic, but will also prevent accidents.
In 2017, the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi had cited that faulty road designs, poor signage systems and flouting of traffic rules are the major causes for deadly accidents in Delhi-NCR.
MG Road was among the most perilous routes in the NCR.
"Since MG Road possesses world class malls, offices of MNCs and many residential societies, there is a challenge to manage heavy rush of traffic in the area.
"Now, we are setting the speed limits to ensure that not only are blockades prevented, but also to ensure the safety of commuters. We will impose fines only so that in the long run the citizen benefits," said Inspector Ravinder Kumar, spokesperson, Gurugram Police.
Besides setting up speed limits, the Gurugram civic body has also contracted six cranes, so that all vehicles parked illegally at the Mall Mile which block traffic can be lifted.
This is not for the first time that district authorities have taken stringent measures to decongest MG Road. In a major step, MCG had recently waived off the property tax on basements of many structures and directed all malls in the area to provide free underground parking.
