Sitting on rape probe gets woman IO suspended

An investigating officer (IO) in Women Police Station in Sector-51 here has been suspended for not carrying out proper investigation in the rape case that was registered in March at the station.
In a complaint that was registered at the women police station, the rape survivor who is an IAS aspirant alleged that she was raped by a person on the pretext of guiding her for preparation of the UPSC examination.
The complainant and the family further alleged that the culprits have also started threatening them with dire consequences after the complaint was registered with the police.
Finding that there was no appropriate response by the city police in solving the case, the family of the rape
survivor have also lodged a complaint at a police station in Jaipur, Rajasthan, their native city.
Conforming that the officer was suspended, a senior official from Gurugram police said, "On the basis of complaint we have suspended the officer and have started an inquiry. The future course of action
will be decided after the inquiry report comes out. Meanwhile, we have deployed senior officials in the investigation of rape case."
The Gurugram Police had to face heavy criticism last month in the handling of rape case of a gang rape of a 19-year-old mother and the murder of her eight-month-old daughter.
The case had resulted in Sandeep Khirwar, the Gurugram Police Commissioner acknowledging the shortcomings and that there were lapses by the police in handling the case and the corrective measures will be introduced.
There has been a huge increase in the sexual crimes against women this year.
Not only the women but even minor have been raped and then murdered.
Besides rape, there has also been increase in cases of molestation and sexual harassment through means of social media.
