Since 2013, over 13,000 rape cases, 15K accused arrested

New Delhi: Even after seven years from the fateful night of December 16, where a 23-year-old women was gang-raped in a moving bus in South Delhi, the court's sentence is yet to be executed. Besides the gruesome incidents of Unnao and Hyderabad have come to haunt the nation.

According to Delhi Police data, from the year 2013-2019, the national capital witnessed more than 13,800 rape cases and more than 15,000 rape accused were arrested. Nirbhaya's mother said that nothing has changed in the last seven years.

According to Delhi Police data, this year till November 17, more than 1,900 rape cases were registered in which over 1,800 were solved and more than 2,000 rape accused held. In the year 2017-2,049 rape cases registered till December 15 in which over 1,800 cases were solved and 2,373 rape accused were caught by police. Last year, 2,043 cases were registered in which 1,935 were solved. As many as 2,372 accused were arrested in the whole year.

In the year 2013, as many as 1559 rape cases were registered till December 15 in which 1,398 cases were solved. Overall more than 1,800 rape accused were arrested. The data further shows that in 2014 nearly 2,069 rape cases were registered till December 15 in which 1,667 cases were worked out. More than 2,000 rape accused were nabbed, reported the police data.

About 2,095 rape cases were reported in 2015 (till December 15) in which more than 1,700 solved and over 2,000 rape accused were nabbed in the whole year. According to Delhi Police data, 2,064 rape cases were registered from January 1 to December 15, 2016, in which more than 1,700 cases were solved and overall 2,181 accused were arrested.

While speaking to Millennium Post, Nirbhaya's mother said that the only change she is witnessing is that the rape accused are now burning the victims. "I have been fighting for my daughter's justice for several years now. After the incident with my daughter, I did not see any change," she said. The mother further said that she is waiting for the final outcome in her daughter's case. While talking about other rape victims, she said, "Their family should stand strong with them (victims). Only then other people will stand with them."

Recently, the Delhi Police Commissioner directed DCPs of districts and units to keep a tab on activities of criminal elements who were earlier involved in crime

against women. The top cop further instructed DCsP that there should be high police visibility on dark patches and stretches, particularly those used by women between 8 pm to 2 am.
