Sheila Dikshit appointed Delhi Congress president

NEW DELHI: With just few months left for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the responsibility to lead the Delhi unit of the Congress party was given senior party leader and Delhi's longest serving chief minister Sheila Dixit. The party high command on Thursday appointed her the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, after Ajay Maken resigned from the post on January 4, citing health reasons. Further, the party's top leadership has also appointed three working presidents Devender Yadav, Haroon Yusuf and Rajesh Lilotia to assist the 80-year old leader.

In view of her age and health concerns, there might be one or more acting presidents. Names of AICC secretary Devendra Yadav, Haroon Yadav and Rajkumar Chauhan had been doing the rounds. Sheila Dixit has said she is not averse to shouldering any responsibility given by the party.

Making the announcement, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of the party's Delhi unit, P C Chacko, said Dikshit would be assisted by three working presidents — Devender Yadav, Haroon Yusuf and Rajesh Lilothia.

"Congress President Rahul Gandhi has appointed Sheila Dikshit as the new Delhi Congress president," party leader PC Chacko told the media here.
