Secy, two staff held for trying to extort Rs 20 cr from Paytm boss

Noida: Noida Police on Monday claimed that they have arrested three people, including a woman for allegedly trying to extort Rs 20 crore from the e-wallet giant's founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma after threatening to leak stolen personal data and confidential information. The arrested woman, who allegedly masterminded the extortion bid, is the secretary of Sharma and the trio had threatened to leak the data and misuse the information to cause the firm loss and dent its public image, officials said.

The three employees of the Noida-headquartered e-commerce and wallet firm were arrested by a team from the Sector 20 police station, while the fourth accused in the case is still at large, a senior official said. The woman who had access to Sharma's personal laptop had allegedly stolen some data and was blackmailing him to cough up the amount, alleged owners. "She had been working with the company for nearly 10 years. She had access to his files. She and her husband, Rupak Jain came up with the plan to steal some private, financial information. They roped in a senior manager in the administration section of the company, Devendra Kumar as well in their plan, who then approached one of his acquaintance Rohit Chomal, a resident of Kolkata, to call and blackmail," police said.

The owner of Paytm had filed a complaint with the police that their employees, a woman and her aides, had stolen some data from the company and were blackmailing. "They were demanding Rs 20 crore for not leaking it. Taking immediate action on it, an FIR was registered and three persons, including the woman, arrested. They are being probed about the data and their modus operandi. We will share the facts as they are unearthed," police said.

Police officials also said that the accused were carrying on with their regular duties and coming to office as usual and they were arrested from the office only. The police further said that the fourth accused is absconding at the moment.
