SDMC to undertake beautification of spaces under several flyovers

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has initiated a beautification drive with the aim to increase the green cover under flyovers.
Under the drive, four sites in Central zone, three sites under South and West zone each, and two zones in Najafgarh zone have been selected for beautification. The Corporation officials said work orders have been issued and it is expected to be complete by September 9.
The civic body had drawn plans to utilise the space under flyovers by constructing sitting spaces, jogging tracks for morning walkers, planting of flowers and decorative lights and setting up water ATMs, among other facilities.
SDMC plans to develop spaces under flyovers at Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, Sarita Vihar, Kalkaji (Outer Ring Road), Outer Ring Road leading to Greater Kailash (Savitri), Chirag Delhi, Outer Ring Road at the intersection of Africa Avenue, Mayapuri, Tilak Nagar (Shivaji Marg), Raja Garden (Ring road), Dwarka, and Bijwasan.
Areas under the Lajpat Nagar and South Extension flyovers have already been developed into parks. Apart from the green areas, sculptures have also been added to make the places attractive.
"The Corporation will speed up the process to transform other selected spaces under the flyovers. The move has been taken to make the city greener," the Corporation official said.
Earlier, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal complimented SDMC for the work it has done towards the restoration of the 'Rock Garden' in Munirka and beautification of the space under the Andrews Ganj flyover. Baijal appreciated SDMC for "restoring and maintaining the green lungs of south Delhi."
"It took the corporation a mere eight days to clear the rubble and clean the area under the flyover and transform it into a well-lit space with sculptures that showcase various yoga positions", the SDMC official said.
