SDMC enrolls 38 street kids into primary school for free

New Delhi: When Shirish Sharma, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation's Deputy Commissioner (West) and Education Director, was supervising a municipality cleanliness drive in South-West Delhi, he did not expect what he found. Sharma discovered around 20-25 families living near the Sagarpur drain and their children wandering in the nearby area.

The SDMC on Monday enrolled all of these 38 street children in their primary school located in Janakpuri's D Block, providing them with all required school materials including school uniforms, school bags, notebooks, lunchboxes and other items.

Deputy Commissioner Sharma had arranged a meeting with the parents of the children after he discovered them and convinced them to enroll their children into the school, so that they can receive the best education the municipality can provide. It was also decided to award Rs 1,000/year to these children as scholarship. Sharma said that the SDMC is committed to providing free primary education to children and this initiative is an excellent step towards this.
