Romanian cyber cheats recruit new people to commit ATM frauds in city

New Delhi: "Romanian cyber cheats bring new faces in their gangs during every visit in the city to commit ATM frauds," said one of the investigators probing the case after five Romanian nationals including two women arrested from North Delhi's Sadar Bazar area for ATM cards cloning.

Investigators told Millennium Post that they have found that before visiting Delhi, they first scan the web to check in which place the ATMs are located in significant proportion.

"After selecting the area, one of the members of the Romanian gang would visit the place to take a house on rent. Once the house is finalised, the cheater calls other associates from Romania," said the investigator.

From their electronic gadgets, police found that searches for ATMs were made.

Another investigator further said,"most of the time Romanian fraudsters bring new faces in the gang to dodge police."

During interrogation, the accused claimed that they targeted 103 bank accounts and skimming was done in ATMs situated in Kalkaji, Sadar Bazar, Karol Bagh and Lajpat Nagar area. "For skimming, they require five persons in the gang," said the investigator adding that Romanian cheaters are working in an organised manner.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad stated that the investigation in the case is on from all angles.

Police have arrested Costache Irina (27), Caragica Elisabeta (22), Dumito Nicolae, Lavtaru Lon and Nistor Llie have also been arrested.

"When the Republic day was coming close, the gang members left Delhi and later on January 28, they again visited Delhi for committing the crime," a police official said.

Skimmers

They installed the skimming device, comprising of a small battery and memory chip, in ATM machines to capture the data of customers. After some time, they again came back and took out the devices from the ATM machine. Thereafter, they transferred the data of customers captured through skimming device into other plastic cards having a magnetic strip on them and turned them into ATM cards and write down the PIN number over them.
