Romanian cyber cheats land in police net

New Delhi: The Romanian cyber cheats including three men and two women once again targeted the ATMs in the city but a CCTV footage landed them in police net in North Delhi's Sadar Bazar area.

Police claimed that the accused were found involved in more than seven cases of fraud. Police claimed that after installing the Skimming device, the women used to visit the ATMs after five hours to take out the device and then put it into plastic cards for further fraud.

The interrogation revealed that the gang visited India on two occasions. The investigating agency claimed that they have recovered as many as 102 cloned plastic cards and one camera with memory clip recovered.

Investigators said that the complainants claimed that even after having their ATM cards inside pocket their money was withdrawn from different places of the city. "In one case, money was withdrawn from Lajpat Nagar area," added the investigator.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad stated that on January 31 an information was received that a skimming device with the camera was found in the ATM Machine of IDBI Bank in Sadar Bazar Branch.

During the enquiry, CCTV footage of the ATM machine was analysed. "During the analyses, it was found that two ladies with masked face entered in the ATM of IDBI Bank Sadar Bazar and they installed the skimming device along with camera in the ATM Machine," said DCP North.

A trap was laid down outside the ATM Machine. "We directed to Bank Manager of IDBI Bank to reinstall the skimming device and camera device in the same ATM machine when the two ladies returned back to the ATM they were nabbed," said DCP North.

They were identified as Costache Irina (27) and Caragica Elisabeta (22). During the probe, they disclosed their involvement in many cases and Dumito Nicolae has also been arrested on the instance of Costache Inna. After that, two another accused namely Lavtaru Lon and Nistor Llie have also been arrested.

During probe, they disclosed that they used to visit India frequently and identified the crowded places for installing the skimming machine.

In this regard, they installed the skimming device, comprising of a small battery and memory chip, in ATM machines at various places to capture the data of customers. They installed a camera device inside the ATM. After some time they again come back and take out the devices from the ATM machine. Thereafter, they transfer the data of customers captured through skimming device into other plastic cards having a magnetic strip on them and turn them into ATM cards and write down the PIN number over them.
