Restrict entry of women: Gurugram Police commissioner to pub, club owners

Gurugram: To deal with crimes involving women, such as prostitution and sex racket, which are prevalent in the city's nightclubs, Gurugram Police Commissioner KK Rao has directed pubs and bars to restrict entry of women.

Acknowledging that the suggestion is controversial, the Gurugram top cop said that it is not very difficult to distinguish between woman who is involved sex racket from those who are not.

According to police, lack of due procedure in checking credentials of club-goers is allowing women involved in flesh trade to enter such places of recreation and solicit people.

Rao also requested owners of pubs and bars to be more responsible in admitting the right people in their establishments, so that the law and order situation does not deteriorate.

The Commissioner's statement comes at a time when many club and pub number of owners are at odds with Gurugram Police over several rules and regulations being imposed on them.

Many believe that lack of stringent measures taken against erring nightclubs has resulted in an increase in crimes in various posh areas of the city.

Areas like MG Road, Sector-29, Golf Course Road, Sohna Road and Cyber Green have a large number of pubs and bars.

As of now, Gurugram Police is only focussing on the pubs and bars of MG road.

Club owners are protesting not only against the rule that prohibits them from keeping their establishments open after midnight, but also against the increase in raids by law enforcement officials.

Sources in Gurugram Police mention that criminal activities such as flesh trade, drug pedaling, betting and even sale of illegal firearms are thriving in such places of recreation.

Since Rao took over as commissioner, Gurugram Police has been tackling these problems head on, with raids having been undertaken in different pubs on two occasions, which led to arrest of over 50 people.

In one of these raids, 16 people, including four foreign nationals, were detained by cops for criminal activities.

"There is no denying the fact that these nightclubs have contributed a great deal in city's economy and we will make sure that these unfortunate incidents do not impact the entire nightlife of the city," said a senior police official from Gurugram police.

"We are in constant touch with the pub owners and requesting them to comply with the rules, so that the law and order situation is maintained effectively," he added.
