Relative held for sexually assaulting 10-yr-old girl

New Delhi: In another case of crime against children in the Capital, a 10-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted at her residence in East Delhi's Shakarpur area by a relative on Saturday night.

Police said they have arrested the accused in the case, adding that the victim had moved some time ago from West Bengal to east Delhi.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when the girl was alone at home. Cops said that the accused had come to the girl's house and on finding her alone, he allegedly assaulted her.

Before fleeing the house, he threatened the girl with serious consequences if she revealed it to anyone.

Cops added that the girl narrated the ordeal to her parents on Sunday morning, following which they informed filed a complaint.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Pankaj Singh said that teams were formed to nab the accused and after they received a tip-off about him, he was immediately arrested.

"He wanted to flee the city when he was nabbed," said the DCP, adding that the accused claimed to be an uncle of the girl and lives near her house.

He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Recent data by DCPCR claimed that 42 per cent of the culprits in POCSO cases are extended family members.
