Police register 1,137 cases for ignoring tenant verification

New Delhi: For the safety of any city, tenant verification is very important but there are landlords who ignore the rule and rent out their properties for money.

In Delhi itself, there are 1,137 cases of violation found during verification of tenants. Sources told Millennium Post that till February 24, as many as 65,163 tenants were checked and more than 26,000 tenants were verified and 20,198 forms filled up for verification. In many cases, the landlords violated the rules.

According to police data in posh South Delhi, the police personnel during verification, registered 114 cases under section 188 of Indian Penal Code after violation found whereas in South East Delhi, as many as 179 cases were registered.

An officer involved in the activity stated that verification is very important for the safety of people.

"Through Police Verification, the history of any tenant can be verified whether the person had any criminal involvement or absconding from other states police,"said the officer adding that it is mandatory for landlords to secure police verification of their tenants before renting out a property.

From South West Delhi, the cops registered 159 cases whereas in Dwarka, as many as 155 violations reported. From North East Delhi-150,Outer-147,West-126 violations were reported.

More than 70 cases were reported from North, Central and North West.

According to police, during investigation of criminal cases, it was found that the accused was not verified by the landlord.

During any verification drive, the law enforcement agency also found that many foreigners were staying illegally in the city.

In the year 2017, a joint operation conducted by Delhi Police and the Foreigners' Regional Registration Office (FRRO) found 20 foreigners, including a minor, were staying in south Delhi illegally.

The city police initiated legal action against the owners of the houses where these foreigners were staying without valid documents.

Recently in an interstate coordination meeting between police officials from Delhi and other states, stress was laid upon increasing police presence, intensive and co-ordinated checking at vulnerable points, tenant verification, guest house checking, paying guest accommodation and sensitization of cyber café owners, second-hand car dealers etc, in order to strengthen the counter terrorism measures.

The city police also verified cyber cafes in Delhi.

Sources claimed that there are as many as 971 cyber cafe on record whereas 7436 times cyber cafes were checked and 16 cases were registered in current year till February 23.
