Police file case after EC complains of fake news
New Delhi: Delhi police on Friday registered a case after the Election Commission (EC) complaint to the investigating agency regarding the "fake news" relating to online voting by NRIs in 2019 General Election, being currently circulated on What's App. According to police, as soon they received a complaint they registered a case under sections 505 (1) (b)(with intent to cause fear/alarm to public, 463 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC and section 3 of the state emblem of India (prohibition of improper use) Act, 2005. Furthermore, the case will be investigated by the cyber cell of Delhi Police.
Asking the police to investigate the matter, the EC said its logo was being used on social media to "mislead" people. "The unauthorised use of the ECI logo accompanying a completely false statement regarding the online voting comes off as something plotted intently to cause mischief," the complaint reads.
