Pensioners applaud Delhi govt for providing financial help

New Delhi: The residents of Delhi have praised the Delhi government for providing special financial assistance to people who receive old-age pension, widow pension and disability pension. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced several measures, including doubling pension under various categories, in a bid to alleviate the financial stress on economically backward citizens.

The Delhi government decided to double the pension under the widow pension scheme for 2.5 lakh beneficiaries, old-age pension scheme for five lakh beneficiaries, and disability pension scheme for one lakh beneficiaries. The Delhi government is providing Rs 4,000-5000 financial assistance to these people.

A 72-year-old Pritipal Kapoor is a resident of West Delhi, who has been receiving old-age pension from the Delhi government for the last five years.

He said, "I am very happy that the Delhi government has decided to give old people like me an assistance of Rs.5000. In this tough time survival is difficult and for people of my age treatment takes a lot of money. After the announcement of the 21-day lockdown, we all thought that this time the treatment will be stopped. But after the assurance from the Delhi Chief Minister and this extra money, we are able to continue the treatment."

A 63-year-old resident of North Delhi, Bharat Singh said, "I am saving all my money for her marriage. I work in a shop but it is closed due to lockdown. I am glad that the Delhi government has supported us by providing this extra assistance. I will save this money for her marriage and this will help me to run the family."

A 38-year-old, Karan Kalra said, "Tough times are always challenging and as a person with disability I always believed in fighting it. But this time, I was really devastated due to no savings. Our own business was not working well and now it has stopped completely. We were personally thinking of taking some loans from the banks and that is the time when the Delhi government announced the financial assistance to the people with disabilities."
