Paralysed in 2003, cop finally reunited with batchmates

New Delhi: Sitting in his wheelchair at his residence in Kerala, Mohammad Riyaz kept reminiscing about his glorious years in Delhi Police.

A policeman of the 1994 batch, Riyaz had been posted as a constable in New Friends Colony police station when he met with a severe accident while coming to duty in South East district way back in May 2003.

The accident left him paralysed and soon he had slipped into a coma. Fortunately, he slowly regained consciousness due to sustained treatment spanning years and reclaimed lost memories of his Delhi days.

All this time, Riyaz's colleagues in Delhi Police remained in constant touch with him. Bound to a wheelchair ever since he recovered, all his friends always invited him when he expressed his desire to visit Delhi once again.

After 15 years, Riyaz's wish will be finally fulfilled as he flew to Delhi along with his mother to meet his old friends in Delhi Police.

His mates from 1994 batch funded his trip to Delhi, which culminated in an emotional Diwali reunion.

As soon as Riyaz landed at Delhi airport, he was received by friends. 'Souhrudam 94', a community of Malayali members of the 1994 Delhi Police batch, organised the reunion.

Riyaz's eyes were moist when he finally met his colleagues after such a long time.

"It was an emotional time for Riyaz. We were in touch with him throughout. It was a hard time for his family and himself. We are delighted to meet him," said Prakash, an Assistant Sub-Inspector.

The 'Souhrudam 94' batch also formed a WhatsApp group and keep the batchmates together virtually. One of the batchmates told Millennium Post that over the 15 years, at least nine cops from their batch passed away. But throughout this time, the group has helped the families of their deceased colleagues.
