Oppn, residents blame govt after rain exposed poor infrastructure

Gurugram: The poor state of infrastructure as exposed after the brief spell of showers has again given an opportunity to the opposition and the residents to criticise the government and the officials. Heavy showers on Friday resulted in large-scale water logging in not only inner parts but also in posh localities like Golf Course Road and Cyber Road that have been recently revamped.

Like always, various part of the city faced the problem of excessive waterlogging, traffic jams and long duration of power outages. In a telling statement of the city's crumbling infrastructure, the newly-built sector road near the IFFCO Chowk caved in for the second time.

To avoid traffic jams and other problems during monsoon, preparations were made in the past weeks. With the works of Badshahpur drain not completed this year, the authorities have stationed 40 pumps to channel out the water.

Majority of these pumps will be stationed on National Highway-8. The Delhi- Jaipur highway bore the brunt of excessive water logging on July 29, 2016, when just 46 millimetres of rain stalled the traffic at the busy route for more than 18 hours. The Haryana government had planned to expand the Badshahpur drain that would have allowed the excess water to flow into the Najafgarh drain. The long process, however, in clearing the area and starting the works has delayed the project.

Even as the district administration may be preparing to deal with the challenges expected during monsoon, most residents still seem dissatisfied with the work done.
