Old PCR vehicles troubling Gurugram cops

Gurugram: The challenge of law and order in Gurugram can be gauged from the fact that on an average every day there are two cases of snatching, eight cases of vehicles theft and six cases of house burgleries.
Moreover, to ensure the safety of women on the streets, patrolling done by the police is one of the major steps to prevent crime against women.
Lack of police officials for long has been cited as a major deficiency. Official data highlights how dysfunctional PCR vehicles are further prolonging the difficulties for law enforcement officials.
Over 40 per cent of the bikes that polic use are obsolete and 26 per cent of four wheelers are defunct. Moreover, it has been years since new purchases have been made. In the past help from corporates have resulted in supply of new vehicles to the district police.
There is an inventory of over 208 bikes with the the Gurugram police out of which 80 are defunct. The 128 two-wheelers that are in use are not in a good shape and require regular maintenance. Out of 144 four-wheelers that are available with the district police, over fifteen vehicles are already more than fifteen years old and as per the law, they need to be discarded. There are ten more vehicles that are approaching the mark of being operational for fifteen years.
There have been instances in the past especially in the outskirts of Gurugram like Sohna where criminals have not been caught by the law enforcement officials just because the official vehicle broke down mid way. The issue of poor quality of vehicles being used by law enforcement officials has been raised by police officials. Sources claim that BS Sandhu, DGP Haryana, has raised this issue with the government. The urgency of the government to enhance the resources for the district police becomes even more acute since there have been spate of crimes in the posh areas of Golf course, golf course extension, MG, Sohna road National Highway-8 and Gurugram-Faridabad road.
The rape of a married woman near the Golf Course extension road in January had again exposed the spike of heinous crimes in these areas.
It has been long since MG road which is also known as the mall mile has become notorious with a lot of criminal activities.
In the past, besides brazen incidents of women being molested, there has been a shootout in the mall and a vehicle tried to run over a police official.
