Providing mouthful of happiness for the poor and needy

As the Delhi government completes two years in office, some of the key poll promises made by the AAP have been fulfilled and have also garnered a huge response. Some of the realistic actions that have made an impact on the ground are seen in areas of education, health and drinking water and most importantly, the aam aadmi canteens.

The AAP, which came to power in February 2015 with a stunning performance, winning 67 out of 70 seats, has taken a slew of measures to provide relief to the aam aadmi. The recently inaugurated canteens triggered an enthusiastic response and proved to be a big achievement in the party's tenure. It has fulfilled its poll promise of providing meals at highly subsidised rates. Now, a man on the street can have nutritious and hygienic food at Rs 10 only.

Similarly, the Jan Ahar scheme had been launched by the AAP government under which poor people and those belonging to the lower-income groups were offered nutritious and delicious meal at a price of Rs 15. Akin to the Amma canteens in Tamil Nadu started by former Chief Minister late Jayalalithaa, the Delhi editions of these canteens have proved to be a different concept all over.

The canteen in LNJP Hospital had witnessed an impressive footfall on the very first day of its inauguration. The visitors, especially attendants of the hospital and patients claimed big relief on availing the facility of subsidised food. Pramod Kumar, a security officer said: "After the tiring shift, I used to manage my meal from the street, but now I feel so good having a proper meal from the hospital canteen itself and that too for just Rs 10." Aam aadmi canteens in Delhi have solved the problem of those like the rickshaw-pullers, daily-wage labourers, construction workers and the like.

"Such a canteen was needed as a large number of people go hungry in the city. It helps to provide nutritious food at a low cost," said Asha, an attendant.
