MCG to seal forty commercial properties
Gurugram: Forty properties will be sealed by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram for non-payment of the property taxes. The municipal body has set a target of Rs 210 crores in property taxes. Officials in the MCG, however, claim that it is still short of the target.
In order to get the required amount, the MCG has already outsourced a firm that is identifying the defaulters and giving them intimation to pay their taxes.
The discount offered by Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has led to rich dividends for the municipal body in the city towards the collection of the property tax. Last year The MCG had collected Rs 175 crores in property tax from more than one lakh seventy-five thousand city residents across four MCG zones. Most of the collections are being done from MCG Zone-3 region which consists of posh colonies and major commercial centres led with a much a greater margin than the other MCG zones.
Zone 3 is followed by Zone -4 with Z, One -2 and Zone 1 in property tax collections. "Non-payment of property taxes was a major challenge faced by the MCG. To deal with the challenge we did not only issue stern warnings to the defaulters but also encouraged the city residents for payment of property taxes by offering a discount," said Yashapal Yadav, the municipal commissioner.
"We have already started the procedures of online payments, which will enable a citizen to pay for services from their home. He has the option to pay us through cash, and cheque also. For cash payments, the amount is restricted to Rs 2000," added Yadav.
Facing severe shortage of funds, earlier this year, the civic body held a massive campaign to collect the property taxes and was successful to collect a large amount due to the strict stance taken by it. According to MCG officials, over 40 per cent of payments is now being done digitally.
