Man attacked fellow inmate in prison van

NEW DELHI: A ride from the jail to Tis Hazari proved danger for 24-year-old Mohammad Naveed, an accused in a murder case, as he was attacked by another inmate with a blunt object inside the jail van in North Delhi's area. Police claimed that he was receiving treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Jatin Narwal confirmed the incident and said it occurred on Thursday inside the prison van.
On their way to the court, police personnel heard the victim shouting for help. They stopped the van to find Naveed had been stabbed by another prisoner, been identified as Nizam, travelling in the same van.
"The incident was reported on Thursday around 9 am. The victim was rushed to the hospital," said a police official.
Police sources said they are probing the motive behind the incident, in which the accused had used blunt object to attack Naveed.
"It is being investigated from where Nizam got the blunt object and the reason behind the sudden fight is being probed," said a police official.
In a similar incident reported in August 2015, two inmates were allegedly beaten to death by seven others, including an infamous outer Delhi-based gangster, in a fight that broke out inside the van heading from court to Tihar jail.
Last year, a 29-year-old inmate was allegedly beaten to death inside a jail van while the vehicle was on its way back to prison.
