Man jumps to death off DND flyover, police suspect family dispute

New Delhi: A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after he jumped into the Yamuna river from the DND flyover in south-east Delhi, a police officer said on Sunday. Police said due to some family problems he took the extreme step. His body was fished after more than 10 hours.

According to police, the incident came to light on May 25 at 11.03 pm after they received information regarding drowning of a male in Yamuna river. Police team rushed to the place of the incident. At the spot which is on Yamuna bridge on DND flyway, a motorcycle was found parked.

"Enquiry at the spot revealed that rider of the bike had jumped into the Yamuna. He is identified as Virender Singh, resident of Radhey Shyam Park Extension. He was unmarried," said police officer.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Kumar Gyanesh said that enquiry further revealed that he was working as a driver of a CA.

He was coming from Noida side and stopped the bike on Yamuna bridge. Later, he jumped into Yamuna river as seen by another motorcyclist going in the opposite carriageway.

Kumar Gyanesh further said that he left his mobile phone, wallet containing documents including identity proof on the bike. The motorcyclist informed about this to guard Sunil, who was posted at guard post. "During the investigation, it was found that the deceased had gone to meet some friends. Later, he jumped off the flyover," police said.

The investigating agency said on May 26, during the search operations at about 2 pm, the body of the deceased Virender Singh had been recovered from the Yamuna river.

In this regard, inquest proceedings are being carried. The body is preserved in AIIMS hospital. During the enquiry, statements of the family members have been recorded. So far no foul play is reported.

"Enquiry had revealed that due to a family dispute, he has committed suicide. His post-mortem will be held on May 27," said Additional DCP.

Family members of the deceased have been informed in this regard.

Police had questioned several persons in this regard to get the further clue in the incident.
